In March 2022, UJAS, in partnership with India Development Relief Fund (IDRF), embarked on an ambitious three-year initiative named Project Renaissance. This project aims to facilitate the socio-economic and cultural assimilation of Pakistani Hindu refugees, some of the most marginalized and displaced communities, now residing in Rajasthan. Our goal is to pave the way for lasting change in their lives, transforming the agony of displacement into a renewed sense of belonging and purpose.

Project Renaissance is a comprehensive endeavor operating on multiple fronts. We form and strengthen grassroots organizations within the refugee community, improve indigenous livelihoods through sustainable and eco-friendly practices, and enhance access to low-cost formal education, particularly for girls.

Key actions include forming 35 Self-Help Groups (SHGs), developing craft skills, promoting agroforestry, and nurturing the indigenous Tharparkar cattle breed. We’re also establishing a primary school in a settlement currently lacking one. Our efforts predominantly benefit women (70%), but also include men and children among the refugees.

We are proud to share that Phase 1 of Project Renaissance has been successfully completed. We’ve facilitated SHG formation, conducted wild food and embroidery training, as well as Tharparkar dairy training, and hosted cultural events celebrating folk and devotional music.

One of the unique aspects of this project is our focus on developing the indigenous Tharparkar cattle breed and the integration of cultural events, which serve to enhance community cohesion and cultural pride among the refugees.
